Theodore Roosevelt: The Rough Riders (Da Capo Paperback)
The entire Roosevelt family legend is based upon the events set forth in this book, especially TR's "crowded hour" in the assaults on San Juan and Kettle Hill. Must read for TR fans. (****)Peter Psouras: Third Reich Victorious: Alternate Decisions of World War II
I went out of town to a seminar and had to have another airplane book. Here is what I picked up at the airport. I am a fan of alternate histories because they show the wisdom of Shakespeare's famous aphorism that "For want of a nail, the shoe was lost; For want of the shoe, the horse was lost; For want of the horse, the rider was lost; For want of the rider, the battle was lost; For want of the battle, the kingdom was lost; And all for the want of a nail" to be found in Richard III. This book delineates a number of "want of a nail" turning points that could have resulted in an Axis victory in the European Theater in WW II. (***)Vince Flynn: Protect and Defend

I grew up reading Forester's Hornblower series and thought that they were the ne plus ultra of sea stories until I came across Patrick O'Brian's series. Captain Jack Aubrey puts the neurotic Hornblower to shame and Dr. Stephen Maturin (physician, spy, naturalist, and duelist) has no parallel. The world of wooden walls, created in infinite detail, will delight the history buff as well. Extremely good read. As a relative of, and named after, President Theodore Roosevelt I have, of necessity, been forced to read a lot of Rooseveltia. This is my favorite book by TR, it recounts his hunting expedition on behalf of the New York Natural History Museum after he left the presidency in 1908. Good view of Africa as it was at the height of the Victorian colonial era and full of detail about the trip that launced the craze for the safari for the next 50 years. (*****)
